JAD FOR REEL Podcast (عن جد) – Episode 3

This third episode of Jad For Reel عن جد , Jadaliyya’s monthly audio podcast, covers Palestine, Syria, refugees, academic boycott, torture, and film. It begins with a roundup of some of Jadaliyya’s hottest November pieces and exciting developments on the ezine. These include the addition of two new pages,  Critical Currents in Islam and Vox Populi  as well as the publication of the Western Sahara Jad Mag  Maghreb page editor Samia Errazouki speaks with fellow co-editor Muriam Haleh Davis about how the recent Algerian Revolution roundtable diverges from existing literature on the revolution. Syria coverage includes the civil war’s impact on development, the death of Abdelqader Saleh, and an interview by Media page Co-Editor Malihe Razzazan with journalist Rania Abouzeid about challenges facing journalists in the country.

The episode also explores the conditions facing refugees in Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine and includes an audio clip from co-editor Noura Erakat’s lecture at Georgetown University on  Palestinian refugees fleeing Syria. Steven Salaita  activist and associate professor at Virginia Tech, discusses the American Studies Association’s resolution to academically boycott Israeli institutions. Palestinian filmmaker Suha Araj discusses her film, The Cup Reader, which is a prequel to her feature film The Khsara Club about Arab women who don’t get married in time. The episode ends with a lecture by  co-editor Lisa Hajjar who untangles the contradictions between the CIA’s claims of administering justice, torture, secrecy and government accountability.
