Clashes erupted between supporters of President Mohamed Morsi and their opponents on Friday evening at the 6th October Bridge near the state television building, Al-Ahram state-run daily reported.
There was no security at the site of the clashes. Meanwhile, army personnel and vehicles cordoned Tahrir Square, fearing further clashes between the two sides.
The clashes started shortly after the Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie addressed an Islamist sit-in in Rabea al-Adaweya, pledging to occupy squares until Morsi is reinstated. The president was deposed on Friday when the military, prompted by mass calls for his resignation, ousted him from his post.
Earlier in the day, violence erupted near the Presidential Guards' premises as they shot a man who came near the barbed wires protecting the headquarters and put a photo of Morsi.
State media reported that three have been killed in the violence, though Mada Masr has only been able to confirm one death.
Supporters of Morsi protesting near the premises said the man was killed and showed Mada Masr his ID. Another Mada Masr reported spotted the dead body at the entrance of the building adjacent to the Presidential Guards' headquarters.
Shortly after the shooting, protesters came closer to the barbed wires and presidential guards fired birdshots to separate them. Their numbers increased as they were joined by others. Mada Masr reporter saw a march of men who said they are from Al-Azhar approaching the site of the clashes and stationing themselves between the presidential guards and the pro-Morsi protesters.
The violence happened as thousands of supporters of Morsi took to the streets of Egypt to demand his come-back.
Protesters, who were led by Brotherhood leader Mohamed El-Beltagy, were saying they won't leave until they get inside the premises and take their president. The location of Morsi remains unknown, though an earlier report by the Associated Press says that he has been transferred from the headquarters of the Presidential Guards to a Ministry of Defense facility.
Meanwhile, in pro-Morsi protests in Beheira, police fired tear gas to disperse protesters as they clashed with anti-Morsi demonstrators, Al-Ahram state-run newspapers reported. In Qena, eyewitness Mahmoud Ahmad said police clashed with pro-Morsi protesters and fired birdshots. One protester was heavily injured in his head, Ahmad said.
In Alexandria, the state-run Middle East News Agency reported that clashes in the Sidi Gaber area between pro-Morsi protesters and their opponents, left over fifty people injured, some with live ammunition.
Al-Ahram also reported that many protesters returned home in Qalyubiya due to the absence of the Brotherhood leaders.
In Cairo, protests by Brotherhood members and supporters were organized around Cairo University, Rabea al-Adaweya, where an Islamist sit-in have been there for days, the Ministry of Defense and Salah Salem road where the Presidential Guards headquarters sits.
Protesters around Cairo University roamed around the Dokki area chanting, "Islamic, Islamic, despite the will of seculars." They passed through a Security Directorate and a church chanting, "Islamic, Islamic."
At the Presidential Guards site, protesters were chanting against the military as ground troops were securing the premises.
